Is there any effect of Genetics on hair loss?

Hair loss is inheritable from parents. The chances of being bald are higher if you have it in both your mother’s side as well as in your father’s side.

Most of the hair loss in men is due to genetics, where two out of three men are affected by the age of 35. 40% of women are prone to hair loss over the age of 30, but, it is not noticeable because it happens all over.

Even though there is no doubt that hair loss is inevitable, taking care is a must.

Does itching your scalp causes hair to fall?

An itching scalp can lead to trouble and more hair loss. The itching may be the result of a fungal infection or due to dryness of the scalp. During these times, it may itch, and this itching of the scalp will cause more hair to fall than usual.

Does dandruff cause hair loss?

An itching scalp can lead to trouble and more hair loss. The itching may be the result of a fungal infection or due to dryness of the scalp. During these times, it may itch, and this itching of the scalp will cause more hair to fall than usual.

Do Hormonal changes affect hair?

Sometimes hair loss occurs due to hormonal changes. Hair loss may happen during puberty, excess testosterone, thyroid imbalance and menopause in women.

During puberty, there are hormonal changes which may hinder the growth of hair and lead to hair loss.

The dominant male hormones, testosterone which gets converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) are responsible for hair growth. Excess of DHT may increase hair but, in some cases, it may cause the hair follicles to shrink with time and leave you bald.

Shedding of hair can be caused by hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

Most cases of hair loss due to thyroid disease is reversible. In severe cases, the treatment might take up to several months.

Hormonal imbalance occurs in women between the age of 45-55 years. During this time, menopause takes place in most of the women.

During menopause, there is a decrease in estrogen and progestogen. As a result, there might be growth in facial hair while there is shedding of hair from the scalp.

Is there a relationship between stress and hair fall?

Yes, stress can cause hair to fall. There are three types of conditions:

  • Telogen effluvium: Hair follicles are in a resting phase, and these hairs fall off. These hairs do regenerate later.
  • Alopecia areata: Under this condition, the immune system attacks the hair follicles, and hairs fall. Hair loss can happen in every part of your body. Repeated hair growth and shedding may occur.
  • Trichotillomania: This is a disorder under which, people pull their hair when they are in stress, and hence, they lose hair.

Regrowth of hair, shed due to stress is possible, but the rate of growth may differ.

Hair shedding triggered by malnutrition is not uncommon. By nutritional deficiency, I mean lack of protein and micronutrients. Hair structure and hair growth are both impacted by our dietary choices.

Amino acids and proteins are essential for healthy hair.

Hair thinning and hair loss can get triggered by the deficiency in amino acids and proteins. Absorption of zinc and iron in the body requires essential amino acids, which helps in maintaining hair.

Zinc and iron have positive impacts in case of deficiency. But, results can be disastrous if taken as supplements without having any needs.

Fatty acids like omega-6 can increase the number of hair follicles which results in better hair.

Deficiency in vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin H (Biotin) is rare. Vitamin A deficiency has no link with hair loss.

However, it can activate hair follicles. Vitamin E has been said to increase the hair numbers but, in excess may result in delayed healing of wounds and reduction in thyroid production.

Similarly, in the case of Biotin, the deficiency is very rare, and it is hereditary. Severe biotin deficiency does cause loss of hair. But no studies are suggesting that biotin supplementation can reduce or reverse hair loss.

There are many doubts concerning using supplements without having any deficiency. Supplements may not be the answer to hair loss, and alternative ways should be applied to take care of hair.

Can hot shower harm your hair?

Hot showers take the moisture away. The hot water takes away the natural oil in your scalp, leaving the hair dry. The dryness of the hair over time makes them weak and brittle. That is why the hot shower must be avoided.

Is applying oil on your scalp good for hair?

Natural hair oils are beneficial for the scalp as well as the hair, as the oil helps to retain moisture. So, with the help of hair oils, your hair remains conditioned.

Again, applying hair oil provides massage to the scalp, which helps stimulate hair growth.

Almond hair oil, castor hair oil, coconut hair oil, are some of the oils which are beneficial for hair.

The hair texture and growth depends on genetics, the environment you live in, nutrition and hair care.

Can shampoo prevent hair fall?

The primary focus of shampoos is to clean your scalp and hair. Apart from cleaning, shampoo has no other part to play. Choosing a proper shampoo is very necessary for terms of harshness. Many shampoos can make your hair dry and frizzy, making it easy to break.

Is shampooing your hair daily good for your hair?

Your scalp produces a natural oil called sebum, which is essential for healthy hair. If you shampoo regularly, it will clean off the oils and render your hair dry and hence set off hair fall.

It is good to shampoo your hair twice or thrice a week and condition your hair after shampoo.

Does plucking your grey hair increase grey hair?

Plucking your grey hair does not increase the number of grey hairs. But, pulling your grey hair out is not suitable as the hair roots get damaged, every time you pull them out.

Grey hairs should be cut short with the help of scissors. This method does not harm the roots of the hair.

What sort of food is good for healthy hair?

Food enriched with proteins, micronutrients, and vitamins is essential for good hair.

Protein and biotin found in eggs packed with nutrients help build healthy hair. Nuts, seeds and lentils are full of omega-6 fatty acids. Fatty fish is also a good source of fatty acids.

Meat deserves to be in our diet, as it is a good source of proteins, zinc and iron. Deficiency in zinc and iron can lead to hair loss. It is difficult for vegetarians to take iron and zinc because it is negligible in vegetables.

Leafy greens like spinach is a good source of vitamin A and vitamin C and have iron in traces.

Are hair serums good for hair?

Hair serum makes your hair shiny and tangles free. It also keeps the dust off of your hair. But, using hair serums too often will damage your hair. The serum available in the market contains silicon and silicon-based ingredients which form a coat upon your hair.

Can hair spray damage your hair?

Most of the hair sprays do not do much harm. But, there are some hair sprays which might make your hair dry. Again you should not comb your hair after using a hair spray it may break your hair.

Can hair wax be used regularly?

Hair wax used for styling hair is thick and contains wax.

The advantage of hair wax over gel is that it keeps the hair conditioned and does not dry out.

But, daily use of hair wax may make your hair greasy and eventually dry your hair.

After the use of hair wax, you must wash your hair before going to bed.

Does wearing a cap make you bald?

Wearing a cap does not make you bald. But, if you have hair problems, the use of cap may reduce the airflow to the scalp. As a result, this may make your scalp dry and itchy which results in further hair loss.

Again, the tightness of the cap also can produce stress on the hair follicle and thus entail hair loss.

As long as you don’t use tight caps, it is alright, but not too often.

Are hair straighteners damaging to your hair?

Application of heat on hair is always damaging, whether it may be hot water or hot iron. It turns hair dry and ultimately weak and brittle.

Do not straighten your hair often, and while using a straightener, apply some hair protective product.

Conclusion

Definitely, hair adds to your appearance and losing hair can become worrisome.

Shedding of hair, without a doubt, is inevitable with age. Furthermore, if your hair loss is due to genetics, there is not much you can do. But, whether your hair is genetically influenced or not, you must take care of your hair.

Taking care of hair must be internal as well as external. Nutrition, sleep, cleaning and conditioning are all important for healthy hair.

Taking supplements by yourself should be avoided, as they are risky unless prescribed by a doctor. The best way to go is to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Eat healthily, drink lots of liquids and keep your hair conditioned and clean. Hair loss is uncertain, and care is required anyway.
